Kim Shaw's Experience

The extensive legal experience that Kim will bring to the bench includes:

  • 25 years of courtroom experience
  • Client representation in well over 1,000 cases involving both criminal and civil matters
  • Nine years as a business owner as a partner in private law firms
  • 22 murder trials
  • Serving as a guardian ad litem for Boone County and advocating for abused and neglected children

Kim has been involved in countless contested hearings and bench trials in both criminal and civil cases. Kim has successfully represented clients in matters such as child custody and visitation, child support, termination of parental rights, dissolution of marriage, juvenile delinquency, status guardianship, conservatorship, jury trails and preliminary hearings in criminal cases, business and professional licenses, small claims, local ordinance and traffic violations, probation violations and motion hearings arguing a vast array of legal issues in City, State and Federal Courts.

About Kim Shaw Experience, Integrity, Fairness

Kim Shaw, a lifelong Missouri resident, was born in Louisiana, Missouri. When she was eight years old, her family moved to Columbia and she graduated from Hickman High School in 1979. Go Kewpies! Working full time at Shelter Insurance she put herself through night school at Columbia College, obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. Next she entered law school, earning her J.D. from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 1989.

Kim began her legal career working in Cape Girardeau County as a public defender. She spent 2 ½ years there, then returned to Columbia to work in the Central Capital Division handling death penalty jury trials throughout Missouri. She was promoted to District Defender of the Central Capital Division prior to starting her own law firm in 2000. Kim spent the next nine years practicing law in mid-Missouri, during which time she served on the family and criminal law committees of the Boone County Bar Association. She then returned to public service by joining the public defender trail office in Boone County where she currently practices in Division 5 multiple days a week.

Kim and her husband, Chuck Brown – an Ashland native - enjoy ATVing, camping and fishing together. They recently moved back to Columbia from Ashland and have enjoyed making their new house a home. Kim is an avid reader and traveller. She looks forward to using her years of legal experience and passion to serve the residents of Boone County as Associate Judge.
